Abstract

1. 1. Glutamine uptake was measured in cortical slices and brush border vesicles of the rat kidney. 2. 2. Proline inhibited glutamine uptake by kidney slices and this inhibition was markedly less in slices from acidotic rats or in slices incubated in a sodium free buffer. 3. 3. Proline also inhibited glutamine transport less in vesicles from acidotic rats. 4. 4. The effect of metabolic inhibitors sodium maleate and sodium azide disappeared in slices from acidotic rats and in slices incubated in sodium-free buffer.
