Critically, much of this work was being supported by American taxpayers through competitive NIH grants. So while many of us academic researchers think of NIH as supporting mostly American health, the NIH, and NINDS in particular, has actually been thinking at a grander scale, and supporting these intrepid individuals, while helping advance the care of the residents of this sub‐Saharan country.
