Genetic disorders of lipoprotein transport in children

Primary lipoprotein disorders are influenced by defects at the genetic level and within the environment. With mapping of the human genome, the identity of many of the genes that predispose adolescents to dyslipidemia and future premature coronary artery disease will be elucidated. The molecular etiology of several lipoprotein disorders has been defined. Such knowledge improves both the understanding of the pathophysiology of the disorders and their treatment. In this article, we review the major dyslipidemias that are expressed early in life, and their genetic etiology.
