Fibroblast growth factor 9 enhances chondrocyte proliferation and phenotype expression in monolayer and microcarrier cultures

Abstract

The effect of FGF-9 on the proliferative capacity and production of cartilage-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) components between a microcarrier culture system and a monolayer system was investigated. The study also provided evidence to illustrate that microcarrier cultures enhance chondrocyte growth and proliferation to a greater degree than monolayer cultures. It was observed that the collagen microcarrier beads facilitate amplification of chondrocyte numbers and continued extracellular matrix assembly. It was suggested that the superior environment offered by the microcarrier system may prove useful in cartilage repair.
