Abstract
A study by Vessey et al. suggests an approximately 12-fold increase in the risk of extrauterine gestation among IUD users when compared with diaphragm users. A review of extrauterine pregnancy and contraception by Tatum and Schmidt showed the rate of ectopic pregnancy among diaphragm users to be within the normal range expected among noncontraceptors. A further study reported by G. Jones indicates that IUDs may impair zygote transport in the Fallopian tubes, resulting in an atypical distribution of ectopic pregnancy.
