Abstract
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a mechanical support system for children with cardiopulmonary failure or isolated respiratory failure. ECMO allows for cardiovascular support, oxygen delivery, and perfusion. Neonates who fail maximal medical management for congenital diaphragmatic hernias, congenital cardiac conditions, meconium aspiration, and persistent pulmonary hypertension may be supported on ECMO until the underlying disease process improves. Despite the risks inherent to ECMO, survival of neonates with favorable neurologic outcomes continues to improve.
