Exponential operator approach to the general-solution to off-resonance RF field interaction

Abstract

Using the properties of exponential operators, a very concise solution is found for the effect of a general NMR pulse on a spin of arbitrary magnitude I at arbitrary resonance offset. The solution agrees with previous calculations, has clear physical interpretation, and is readily incorporated into the formulation of multipole NMR.
