Abstract
This chapter reviews the key tenets of evidence-based practice (EBP), presents a historical view of the work, and introduces a select few frameworks that have demonstrated impact over time. EBP in healthcare today uses a formal process with specific criteria to appraise emerging evidence and methods for incorporating that evidence to inform and change practice. This chapter discusses the importance of EBP for nursing and presents a summary of key EBP nursing models in use today. These models vary in detail and in explicit criteria and methods used to carry out an EBP inquiry. The key EBP nursing models include Cheryl Stetler’s model of research utilization, Dobbins’s framework for dissemination and utilization of research, Funk’s model for improving the dissemination of nursing research, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario’s Clinical Practice Guideline Implementation Model, The Johns Hopkins Nursing EBP Model, The Iowa Model of Research-Based Practice, Rosswurm and Larrabee’s Model for EBP Change, and the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation.
