title = "Evaluation of the Association of Academic Physiatrists Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship",
abstract = "The Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship is an 8-wk program hosted by the Association of Academic Physiatrists and offered to first year medical students. Various institutions sponsor participants and provide clinical exposure and mentorship opportunities to promote interest in the field. The program has had more than 100 medical student participants. Students were asked to complete a preparticipation and postparticipation survey. Results revealed a statistically significant increase in interest in physiatry and participants' scores for comfort and experience level in obtaining a history of present illness, general physical examination, and managing developmental, musculoskeletal, and neurologic disabilities. The Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship program provides an opportunity for mentorship and exposure to various subspecialties that likely reinforces student interest in those who are predisposed to physiatry. Students' increased comfort level in treating patients with developmental, musculoskeletal, and neurologic disabilities may lead to improvements in the quality of and access to care received by these populations. All participants gain an increased awareness of the scope of practice of physiatry that will hopefully lead to the increased integration of physical medicine and rehabilitation into the care plans and as a standard of care for patients who might greatly benefit.",

note = "Funding Information: The Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship is an 8-wk clinical externship program in PM&R hosted by the Association of Academic Physiatrists and offered to medical students before their second year of medical school. The program has received funding from the Roosevelt Warm Springs Foundation and the Craig H. Nielsen Foundation. The program was piloted in 2012 and has had more than 100 medical student participants. Various institutions sponsor participants and educate them in the essentials of PM&R in an effort to promote interest in the field and provide student-faculty mentorship opportunities. The various host sites that volunteered to participate in the program represent academic institutions distributed across the United States. Sites were required to provide a breadth of experiences that represented the field and exposure to all age groups. Each has an affiliated PM&R residency program and provided experiences in inpatient settings, outpatient settings, and resident didactic education (). Students submitted applications for selection and indicated their top three programs of those available. The students selected for participation were ranked by the host site directors and the highest ranked students were matched with their highest ranked sites. Faculty mentors from each site were chosen by the respective department chair and assigned to student participants as their longitudinal mentor. Participants were provided a $4000 stipend and were required to submit a case report for presentation at the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Meeting. The sponsor site reimbursed participants for event registration and travel. In addition to the in-person clinical rotations at each institution, students participate in an online teleconference that provides additional PM&R-related educational resources to aid program participants in their overall understanding of the field. The present study seeks to analyze the impact of the MSSCE program on medical students{\textquoteright} choice of PM&R as a specialty. Second, the article will assess whether the program enhanced the participants{\textquoteright} confidence in caring for persons with disability.
