Abstract
In vitro investigation of joint biomechanics on anatomical specimens requires a mechanism to provide proper constraint and loading conditions so that joint kinematics, pressure distribution, wear, etc. can be studied. A dynamic servo-hydraulic joint simulator has been developed for the purpose of producing accurately repeatable dynamic load cycles on anatomical specimens for functional comparisons between normal anatomical joints and surgically altered specimens. Utilizing digital feedback control over three individual channels this simulator, currently configured for knee joint applications, represents a significant improvement over existing apparatus. Proper load magnitudes and control conditions must first developed. Force and kinematic analyses have been carried out on a knee model consisting of aluminum components and a total knee prosthesis.
