Abstract
The pathological mechanism of synkinesis following facial paralysis is not completely understood. Consequently, current treatment options have mixed efficacy. The main pathophysiologic mechanisms of synkinesis-aberrant regeneration of facial nerve fibers, ephaptic transmission of impulses, and somatotopic reorganization of the facial nucleus- underscores the challenges in establishing effective treatment for synkinesis. More recently, enhanced understanding of the electrophysiologic alterations in peripheral nerves post injury has opened new opportunities for therapeutic targeting and more effective treatment of synkinesis.
