Abstract
The greatest challenge during esophageal resection and reconstruction is the preparation of the esophageal conduit and completion of the esophageal anastomosis. The viability and function of the esophageal conduit are the most important factors affecting postoperative outcome and quality of life. Esophageal conduit options are limited to stomach, colon, and jejunum. Options for esophageal replacement may be further limited by previous surgeries and coexisting diseases. Therefore, a knowledge of incidence, risk factors, diagnosis, management, and prevention of esophageal conduit necrosis is key to an understanding of esophageal surgery.
