Abstract
Using a previously established animal model for evaluating biological ingrowth into a porous-coated implant, we evaluated the effect of coating a porous-metal implant with hydroxylapatite on the ability of bone to bridge a two millimeter interface gap. The results of this study show that there is an HA-induced enhancement of bone growth across the gap as compared to the overreamed controls (gap only) in which ingrowth was not detectible in any specimens. However, the shear strength of this newly formed bone is significantly lower than that observed for a press-fit implant.
