Abstract

Histopathological observations on chronically implanted abdominal aortic catheters in 7 monkeys are presented. Catheters were functional from 12 wk to 16.5 mth. Two pathological processes were noted. One involved ensheathment of the catheter by organizing thrombus with maintenance of the integrity of the underlying wall. The other process was characterized by mural degeneration, aneurysm formation, peri adventitial fibrosis and local lymph node enlargement. Despite these striking changes catheters generally continued to function well. It is hypothesized that catheter ensheathment may eventuate in mural destruction and aneurysm formation if the catheter sheath herniates through the media and then ruptures into adjacent extravascular tissue.
