Abstract

In this study, we attempted to determine whether PMMA particles stimulate the proliferative capacity and metabolic activity of normal human articular cartilage cells. In addition, the hip or knee joint wear products in these arthroplasties may affect the survival of the non-replaced portion of the joint. Articular cartilage cells incubated with PMMA displayed two patterns of DNA synthesis profiles (TABLE 1) Cells from one group of patients (Pattern A), showed decreased proliferative capacity following PMMA exposure. In the second group of patients (Pattern B), exposure of cells to PMMA induced insignificant to increased proliferative capacity.
