Effect of high and low doses of steroids on head injuries

In the first 24 hr after impact, methylprednisolone seemed not to be effective in improving the clinical picture. Instead, the steroid medication exerted a definite beneficial effect on the second day post impact, and maintained it. The drug did reduce the mortality and morbidity after head injury and also reduced cerebral edema. However, the improvement after head injury with methylprednisolone does not seem to be dose dependent.
