abstract = "The response of anterior cruciate ligament cells plated on flexible silicone membranes to biaxial cyclic strain was investigated. The ligament cells isolated from two patients were propagated in monolayer cultures and the cells were induced inflammation by treating them with IL-1β. These cells when subjected to cyclic strain, showed decreased proliferative capacity and gene marker expression compared to their static controls. The results suggested that cyclic strain exacerbates the inflammatory effect of IL-1β thereby impeding phenotypic expression of ligament cells.",
