Abstract

A mathematical model is described for obtaining the desired in-air photon fluence distribution from a linear accelerator by combining collimator motion with variations in the output rate. The model can be used for collimators with pairs of independently controlled jaws, as well as for multileaf collimators, and can be implemented in various ways to accommodate linear accelerators from different manufacturers. The validity of the model has been demonstrated by film and plastic scintillator dosimetry measurements. Methods for clinical implementation of the model on a Philips SL 20 linear accelerator equipped with a multileaf collimator are also discussed.
