Abstract

This chapter outlines the processed and techniques of advanced airway management with emphasis on pre-hospital care, but applying principles which are equally useful for in-hospital emergency airway management. Further discussion goes into the equipment available to manage a patient's airway along with the benefits and difficulties of each. It outlines the importance and techniques of sedation for transfer and dealing with difficult intubations and oxygenation in these scenarios. It explores the decision making prior to attempting drug assisted airway manoeuvres to ensure safe and appropriate intubation, along with emergency drills and the procedure for formulating failed intubation plans. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the most commonly used anaesthetic agents are described, along with suggested dosing regimens in the pre-hospital setting. There is a focus on the simplified, protocol derived, strategy for the non-anaesthetist asked to manage sedation out of hospital.
