Abstract

Herniated lumbar disks are one of the most common pathologies encountered by neurosurgeons. Disk material can herniate out from annulus fibrosis, and compress traversing and exiting nerve roots adjacent to the disk. Compression of these nerve roots causes a well-recognized set of specific clinical symptoms that may require surgical decompression. The common anatomical landmarks and steps necessary to decompress these nerve roots, relieve pain, and prevent irreversible neurological injury are reviewed.
