note = "Funding Information: In spring 1994, a volunteer work group from the emergency department of an inner-city academic medical center and a school of nursing was convened to brainstorm about how to increase our emergency department{\textquoteright}s responsiveness to DV. The hospital protocol was minimal, and no training specific to domestic violence had been provided for staff. The group decided that its first act would be to apply for a program development grant to both solidify its goals and provide funding for training, reference materials, a research assistant, and patient education materials. The group applied to and received funding from the ENA Foundation.",
