Abstract

A method has been developed for the determination of free silica and manganese in evaluating occupational exposure during the mixing, transporting, crushing, and sieving of manganese ore. This procedure uses phosphoric acid to dissolve silicates and manganese from the silica residue. Flameless atomic absorption spectrometry is used to determine the manganese in the filtrate and to determine the silicon in the form of the sillcomolybdate complex. Various experimental conditions and interference by different cations are reported.
