Abstract

To the Editor: I am bothered by the assumption underlying Dr. Blackhall's article (Nov. 12 issue)¹: that the medical judgment and expertise of a physician allows him or her to judge another person's quality of life. Blackhall contends that it may have been unethical to offer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to her 30-year-old patient with acute myelogenous leukemia in light of statistics that show that virtually no patient with cancer who survives CPR lives long enough to be discharged from the hospital. Blackhall implies that for the patient, the ensuing “harm” of surviving CPR — with the prospect of spending.
