Abstract
New knowledge and technology are being added to healthcare at a rapid rate. In order for physicians to incorporate new knowledge to their practice, a process of lifelong learning must occur. In order to teach adults, one must understand how they learn. Andragogy is the study of how adults learn. There are several learning theories based on the principles andragogy and many of them are used in lifelong learning and improvement (LLI) of physicians. There are several approaches to instructing adult in LLI. The most frequently used are lectures, group discussion, simulation, and self-instruction. LLI that base their educational strategizes on multiple learning theories and use multiple instructional design methods are most effective and are associated with improved knowledge, skills, and patient outcomes.
