Abstract

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a congenital heart defect where there is significant narrowing of the descending thoracic aorta. It is commonly grouped into three categories: (1) isolated coarctation, (2) coarctation and ventricular septal defect, and (3) coarctation and complex intracardiac anomalies. Complications associated with repair of CoA include paradoxical hypertension, thoracic duct injury, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, limb ischemia, and paraplegia. This chapter will discuss the importance of preoperative evaluation to avoid errors in judgment and the proper execution of the operation to yield optimal results.
