Abstract

A physician’s ability to practice medicine in the United States is regulated by each state’s Medical Practice Act. The Act establishes a State Medical Board to implement the Act’s requirements. All Boards have physician and lay members. The Federation of State Medical Boards published A Guide to the Essentials of a Modern Medical and Osteopathic Practice Act (henceforth, the Guide) in 2009. This includes requirements for licensure (including training, examinations, and continuing education), grounds and procedures for professional discipline and measures for dealing with incompetent physicians.
