Cognition and Hippocampal Systems in Aging: Animal Models

This chapter considers how research using laboratory animals contributes to our understanding of aging in mammals. It deals first with how such studies help to address some of the more vexing questions about the nature of aging that have arisen in research with humans. It shows that animal models of cognitive aging can provide a framework for research to address more fundamental questions about the mechanisms through which the aging process is regulated and expressed in neural systems. Together with the results of studies on the septo-hippocampal projection, it also becomes apparent that aging has an impact on different neural elements within this circuitry. Studies have also shown significant neurobiological changes within the hippocampus proper that are correlated with cognitive decline during aging.
