Abstract
It has been just over a decade since the term "proteomics" was coined. Currently, many researchers are taking advantage of proteomic technology to elucidate protein changes between healthy and diseased states. Proteomics is defined as a scientific approach to elucidate all protein species within a cell or tissue. Although the application of proteomic techniques and strategies to the field of medicine is beginning to revolutionize the way biomarker discovery is conducted, the current reality has not always kept pace with previous expectations. The clinical application of proteomics offers much promise for biomarker discovery; however, issues with regards to preanalytical variables, analytical variability, and biological variation must be addressed if further progress is to be gained. This article provides a review of the clinical application of proteomics with the emphasis on current practical issues and challenges facing proteomic research.
