Abstract
Ureteral obstruction secondary to compression by retroperitoneal nodes was previously considered an uncommon complication of malignant lymphoma. A review of 384 cases of lymphoma showed that obstructive uropathy occurred in 7.1% of the patients. A high index of suspicion of this complication is warranted because less than 50% of the patients with ureteral obstruction had symptoms or signs related to the urinary tract. The periodic use of an intravenous pyelogram is strongly recommended for routine monitoring of the genitourinary tract in patients with lymphoma. Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are effective means of palliation, even in patients with acute renal failure secondary to bilateral ureteral obstruction by retroperitoneal lymphoma.
