Abstract

We should look very hard at what is required to maintain the role of clinical departmental directors as clinician-scholars and academic leaders. We should consider what is needed to permit them to have the time and energy to participate in their own areas of scholar-ship, and to be active in longer-term planning not only for their departments but also for their own medical institutions and national health issues as a whole.
