Abstract

A new formulation for the statistics of the response of linear systems to nonstationary excitation is developed. Both the process and its envelope are examined and exact statistics are determined for the general linear systems subjected to modulated white-noise input. Then, the important case of oscillator systems is studied, and by use of functional operator concepts, approximations are obtained for the response statistics. These approximations are based on well-known stationary statistics, are simple in form, and provide meaningful insight into the characteristics of nonstationary response.
