Abstract
Catastrophic hemorrhage from carotid artery blowout may occur when the vessel becomes exposed from wound breakdown after radical head and neck surgery. A new technic for carotid artery protection is described in which a trapezius muscle flap is utilized. In addition, other methods of prevention and control of carotid hemorrhage are reviewed and discussed. We recommend the prophylactic use of this flap as carotid protection in high risk cases.
