Abstract

Bipolar and Related Disorders (bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, cyclothymic disorder, and other specified bipolar and related disorder) are impairing disorders characterized by periods (episodes) of euphoria and/or intense irritability and periods of depression and/or irritability. Bipolar and related disorders affect both children and adults cross-culturally and are associated with impaired cognitive, social, and occupational functioning. This article briefly describes the prevalence, presentation, assessment, and treatment of bipolar and related disorders in children and adults.
