BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ORTHOFIX AXIAL EXTERNAL FIXATOR.

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Static and fatigue tests using the standard Orthofix unilateral external fixator were performed. Although the Orthofix fixator is a unilateral frame design, its rigidity and failure strength under high loading conditions are comparable to other quadrilateral fixators with transfixing full pins. The ball joint locking strength has been found to be adequate under normal application. During repetitive loading of the fixator frame and tightening of the screw and locking cam, surface wear and abrasion did occur, but they appeared not to affect the stiffness performance of the system.
