title = "Bilateral cytomegalovirus panuveitis after high-dose corticosteroid therapy",
abstract = "A 30-year-old previously healthy woman who received immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids developed an unusual culture-proved cytomegalovirus panuveitis bilaterally. The atypical clinical course was marked by bilateral exudative detachments with minimal evidence of retinitis. Any patient receiving blood transfusions and immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids is potentially at risk for developing ocular cytomegalovirus infection, and the clinical presentation of the ocular infection may be atypical.",

note = "Funding Information: A 30-year-okl woman underwent a craniotomy for evacuation of a subacute right subdural hematoma and removal of contused brain tissue from the right frontal and temporal lobes. During surgery she received a transfusion of four units of packed red blood cells. Postoperatively, she was given a maintenance dosage of 24 mg of dexamethasone each day for nine days. Corticosteroids were then tapered durjng three days to 2 mg of dexamethasone per day. Two weeks after surgery a bone flap was replaced, and dexamethasone was increased again to 24 mg/day for three days, Dexamethasone was then reduced to 1 mg/day for six days, during which time severe leg pains and red eyes were noted. Corticosteroids were tapered during the next five days, and the patient was discharged four weeks after her initial surgery, on a regimen of 1 mg of dexamethasone daily. At the time of discharge she complained of leg pains. Blurred vision developed a few days later. The leg pains From the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois.
