This paper reviews operant-based bahavior therapies that can be used to promote improvement in drug abuse patients. The paper describes a behavioral model of drug abuse and then discusses four behavior therapy strategies that can be used in treatment of drug abuse: extinction, satiation, punishment, and reinforcement. Examples are given of behavior therapy techniques that have been implemented in treatment of drug abuse, particularly in the treatment of opiate abuse; studies evaluating the efficacy of these techniques are reviewed and recommendations are offered on applying behavior therapy interventions in drug abuse treatment settings.
