Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) function during mycobacterial infection is poorly defined. This report describes PMN adherence to plastic during and after acute mycobacterial infection. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes from patients with active tuberculosis and healthy tuberculin-positive subjects were significantly hyperadherent compared with control PMN from healthy tuberculin-negative donors. The augmented adherence was mediated in part by a plasma factor.
