Abstract

This chapter discusses the model of processing along with its characteristics: (1) perceptual processing may proceed on several independent channels simultaneously; (2) an input receives the same perceptual analysis regardless of whether or not it is “attended”; and (3) stimulus encoding is effortless; capacity limitations in human information processing are because of stages subsequent to encoding devoted to a discussion of evidence pertaining to these three propositions. The independent channels model appears to be an excellent first approximation to reality. The hypothesis that inputs receive the same perceptual analysis whether or not they are attended seems not decisively refutable on the basis of existing evidence.
