title = "Attending Physicians in the Neurocritical Care Unit",
abstract = "An observed four-decade increase in the size and number of intensive care units (ICUs) in the US has not been accompanied by a similar increase in the critical care physician workforce, raising concerns that intensivists are becoming overwhelmed by workload. This is especially critical in academic institutions where attending intensivists must couple teaching and academic duties with patient care. This chapter reviews the importance of physician intensivist staffing in the ICU (including the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU)) within a healthy model of ICU functioning, the different roles of the ICU attending in an academic institution, and the impact of intensivist to patient ratios on the overall efficiency of the intensivist on performing those roles proficiently.",
