Abstract

Given that diabetes-related atherosclerotic vascular disease is the leading cause of death in older patients with diabetes, aggressive treatment of multiple risk factors is the name of the game. A timely, multi-interventional approach can reduce risk as early as 6 months. Explaining an "A through E" strategy to patients may improve patient participation, with greater numbers of patients achieving treatment goals in a shorter period of time. Use of an "A through E" handout can reinforce, the importance of multiple therapies. In summary, the evidence is clear. Older patients with diabetes benefit tremendously from CVD risk reduction. It is our responsibility to avoid clinical inertia and to find ways to implement these guidelines into our day-to-day practice.
