Abstract

A novel membrane fouling index, UMFI, was developed in this study on the basis of a unified Hermia model. The concept of UMFI properly accounts for the membrane-specificity of fouling potential, and enables direct assessment of the total and the irreversible fouling of commercially available LPHF membranes in bench scale. A simple experimental unit was established, and the resulting UMFI values statistically similar to the pilot scale UMFIs. The UMFI method established in this study may be applied to the design and operation of full scale LPHF membrane filtration facilities.
