Abstract
Antipsychotic medications are prescribed for a number of conditions in children and adolescents. Their use in the treatment of pervasive developmental disorders, Tourette's disorder, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in young patients is becoming more common. Owing to a reduced propensity to cause neurological side effects, "atypical" antipsychotics are more commonly prescribed to children and adolescents suffering from psychiatric disorders than "typical" antipsychotics. Based upon the data that are available, atypical antipsychotics may be safe and effective for the acute treatment of some psychiatric disorders in pediatric patients. However, longer-term studies of the efficacy and safety of these medications are both warranted and needed for this vulnerable population.
