Abstract
This article reviews rodent models developed to study the complex biology of ingestion. Specifically, we highlight studies designed to emulate aspects of human disease such as eating disorders and obesity. We outline the origins, strengths and weaknesses of each paradigm as well as examples of novel findings using these well-established models. Taken together, this review provides a glimpse into the diverse preclinical animal paradigms scientists have developed over the years to better understand the mechanisms that guide ingestion.
