There are many separate parameters that contribute to the morbidity of any given head and neck infection. On one side there are characteristics such as the virulence, pathogenicity, and antibiotic sensitivity of the invading organism. On the other hand the age, general health, and immunologic capability of the host are factors that the responsible physician must consider. The specific location of the infection and the anatomy and physiology peculiar to that site are further considerations, and it is these latter that are considered in this presentation.
