T1 - An Update on the New Curriculum for Educating Radiologists About Physics

N1 - Funding Information: In response to the problems and challenges outlined in “An Opportunity for Radiology” [ 1 ], an educational summit on physics education in the radiologic specialties was held in Atlanta, Ga, in January 2006. The summit was sponsored by the AAPM and cosponsored by 16 scientific and professional organizations, including the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee, the ABR, the ACR, the American Association of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America. The first day of the summit was devoted to the physics education of diagnostic radiologists. Thirteen specific recommendations for improving the physics learning process in radiology residencies were developed and published in the second Radiology article cited earlier [ 2 ]. The lead responsibility for completing these recommendations was assigned to specific organizations. The AAPM was given the responsibility of revising the physics teaching curriculum for diagnostic radiology residents, in part because the AAPM had started a revision 2 years earlier. The revision is occurring under the aegis of the Medical Physics Education of Physicians Committee of the AAPM Education Council. The curriculum redesign is headed by one of us (PHH), with the other (WRH) serving as an AAPM-appointed special advisor. The committee includes physicists, radiologists, and radiology residents. The goal is to evolve a curriculum for the physics education of radiologists that focuses on the physics knowledge essential for radiologists in the practice of their discipline.
