Abstract

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people today face high rates of poor health and early mortality. In addition, culture loss and language loss in AI/AN communities are having a profound impact on child-rearing practices and child welfare. This chapter will discuss the influence of historical trauma, poverty, and culture loss on AI/AN men and parenting styles. The importance of culturally responsive teaching practices in early childhood programs that serve AI/AN communities will be discussed.
