To the Editor: In their article (June 7 issue),1 Hauser et al. provide convincing evidence that measurement of urinary orotidine excretion after the administration of allopurinol is a simple and reliable test for the identification of women who are heterozygous for X-linked ornithine carbamoyltransferase deficiency. The authors go one step further and state that this test may also be diagnostic in women (and I would think also in men) whose medical history is compatible with such a deficiency. Although I agree with this last statement, I think that it needs clarification. The mechanism for orotic aciduria in ornithine carbamoyltransferase deficiency.
