Abstract
Mycobacterial infections take a heavy toll on HIV-infected patients. The resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) in the U.S., beginning in 1985, is closely related to the HIV epidemic, and in developing countries, TB is the most important HIV-related opportunistic infection (OI). TB can be difficult to diagnose in a person with HIV infection because TB symptoms are similar to those of numerous other OIs. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is a serious infection in advanced HIV disease. Effective treatment and preventive therapies for MAC have reduced morbidity and mortality.
