Abstract
Polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumovax, Merck, Sharpe & Dome) has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials of normal adults.1-6 Side effects are infrequent and reactions, when they occur, are generally mild. During a vaccine study of children with nephrotic syndrome we observed an unexpectedly high frequency of vaccine reactions which correlated with antibody response. One child with a severe reaction is reported in detail.
