Abstract
The use of Freon propelled dexamethasone nasal spray (Turbinaire) in nasal allergy successfully alleviates symptoms but may cause partial suppression of adrenal function. To evaluate the significance of adrenal suppression in hay fever, the 17-hydroxy-steroid excretion of seven patients was followed through a ragweed hay fever season. Partial adrenal suppression was observed in four of the patients and temporary complete suppression was observed in one. After discontinuance of the drug a prompt return of normal adrenal secretion was observed. The risk of long-term adrenal suppression from the seasonal use of Turbinaire seems small.
